Established in 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, Petra has been chosen by the BBC as one of "the 40 places you have to see before you die" with its spectacular architecture cut into the rock and water conduits.
Petra remained unknown to the western world until it was discovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. Since then it has become Jordans most visited tourism attraction.
Described as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage", and included in BBC's "40 places you have to see before you die", Petra is a must see on a holiday to Sharm, Egypt.
Lying on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin amongst the spectacular mountains of Wadi Araba, Petra is famous for its architecture and water conduits system, as well amazing Roman theatre and scenery.
The Plan
We will pick you up from your hotel in Sharm el Sheikh at 4.30am and transfer you to Sharm Airport where you will fly to Aqaba.
From there you will drive on an air conditioned coach to Petra where a guided tour begins. We will enter Petra on foot through the spectacularly beautiful narrow and winding gorge over 1kilomete in length, until the gorge opens out revealing the Great Treasury (which can be seen in the pictures below).
After visiting the Great Treasury your guide will take you around the grand Roman Theatre of Petra.
Roman Theatre
Beyond the Street of Facades lies the Theatre, which was constructed in the early 1st century AD by Nabataeans and enlarged and improved by the Romans shortly after their annexation of the Kingdom in 106 AD. They accomplished this by ruthlessly gouging away a street of houses or tombs in order to extend the rear of the auditorium, which could then accommodate 3000 people.
This also improved the acoustics of the theatre and supported a drain, which took the run-off water around the sides of the theatre. The standard Roman-design theatre today lies open to the Outer Siq, but would originally have been enclosed by a wall and completely cut off from the street.
Ancient Tombs of Petra
Next on your guided tour is the the Royal Tombs (the Rainbow Tomb is a must for photographers), as well as hundreds of monuments, tricliniums, and obelisks, all carved from the multi-shaded, rose red sandstone.
Lunch at the City Center
A walk through the colonnade of Roman Byzantine Petra brings us to the city centre for lunch. After lunch we continue our tour to the hill of Al-Habis (crowned with a crusader-era fort) for a breathtaking panoramic view of deep gullies and uniquely coloured rock formations.
Free time and Shopping in Aqaba
After you have seen the magnificent sights of Petra you will be driven back to Aqaba for an hour of free time, perfect for shopping or if your prefer having a drink and relaxing.
After seeing Aqaba you will be transferred to Aqaba airport for your flight back to Sharm el Sheikh where you will be transferred to your hotel.

Excursion to Petra by plane from Sharm ( Stopped Now )
Booked this trip and went on Tue the 29th of October 2013. Me and my partner were unsure about this trip and almost cancelled last minutes due to recent troubles in Cairo. So glad we did not do this as we went ahead and loved it. Ahmed was our tour guide and met us at Cairo airport and he took us to the museum, where he had so much interesting information to tell me and my partner and also another guy who was on the tour. We then had a boat trip on the Nile to get to our lunch. We then went to the pyramids, and wow is all i can say. You cannot appreciate them till you see them yourself and we got them to ourselves as there was hardly any tourists there.... Perfect time to go! After this we were then taken to a shop that made oils made from flowers and got to smell the lotus oils and told how they made then. After this we were taken to be shown how the papyrus paper, excuse the spelling was made. We were then taken back to the airport to go back to our hotel in Sharm. We had no problems what so ever and we loved our trip. If you have a doubt, don't, go for it, the experience is amazing. A big thank you to Ahmed that made our trip comfortable and memorable. We cannot wait to book up again and see the valley of the kings next time.

Petra was absolutely amazing. The great treasury cut into the rock face was better for me than the pyramids, and the view around Petra were fantastic. Day was very well organised thanks to Mohamed and our brilliant tour guide. It is a long day but would definitely recommend SharmExcursions and seeing Petra

We went on the 1 day coach trip to Cairo and from start to finish was an excellent day. Yes it was a 24 hour day having left at 1:00am but worth it. Coach was air conditioned, drinks on board and some lovely people. We arrived in Cairo and went to the Egyptian Museum first, Papryus Shop, Cruise down the Nile with Lunch, then the Pyramids/Sphinx and finally onto the Perfume Shop. The whole day was fantastic and Abraham our guide was very professional and knowledgable. I wouldnt hestitate to use this company again.

Me and and a friend are interested in going on the Mount Sinai tour in April. We would like to ask if there is any possibility to arrange a pickup outside of Sharm El Sheikh? Me and a friend are planning to travel from Suez earlier in the day to arrive in Sharm El Sheikh for the Mount Sinai pickup time at 9pm. Is there an option that you could pick us up anywhere further west from Sharm El Sheikh or even from Suez?
Many thanks
